The exhibition offers the public a path along those style-characteristics of Leonardo’s paintings that are also recognizable through the works of his direct and indirect students and followers, called the Leonardeschi.

The rich production of the Leonardeschi was in fact appreciated and demanded by the market of collectors in the 500’s, thus contributing to a broader and more capillary diffusion of those style-characteristics and more generally of an artistic “taste” inspired by the painting of Leonardo.

Through the works of these artists one can observe and deepen how the styles and the innovations of Leonardo’s art spread quickly from the end of the 400s often thanks to the production of this group of his followers.

Three Holy Children

As noted in her preface to the catalogue the art historian Giovanna Nepi Scire’ (previous superintendent for the Venetian Museum Polo): “These artists propose motives, figurative and compositional expressions, technical choices that retrace his steps”. “They contributed to the success anddiffusion of his inventions”. Furthermore, the exhibition “offers us the possibility to better define their own figures, which, because they have always been generically defined as ‘leonardesque’, have sometimes lost their own identities”.

The exhibition is openly inspired by the belief of the late great scholar Carlo Pedretti concerning the importance of re-evaluating the artistic and cultural phenomenon of the Leonardesque, deepening the research about them and allowing a better understanding also by the general public.
Writing about the “paintings and drawings of theLeonardian school”, Pedretti affirmed that they are “in many ways related to the artistic theories of Leonardo and often present recognizable interventions of the same Master”.

Bare-Breasted Magdalene

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) (attr.) and Assistant (Marco d’Oggiono?, 1467-1524)

Therefore, it is not by chance that 14 of the works showed in Beijing are the same ones that Pedretti wanted in an important exhibition in Brussels in 2007 (in the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Community). Among these, there are remarkable works such as the “Bare-breasted Magdalene”, discovered by the famous Austrian scholar Wilhelm Suida and exhibited for the first time in 1949 in Los Angeles in the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci. Loan Exhibition”.

In the opinion of Suida: “there is no doubt that the present painting is one of the most perfect and most attractive works by Giampietrino”. Pedretti also considered this work to be “of astonishing beauty and fascinating iconography”. In an essay dedicated to the painting, he wrote that “the panel for a long time attributed to Giampietrino” has “an extraordinary background of mountainous landscape of undeniable Leonardian character to the point of evoking even that of the Monna Lisa or of the Sant’Anna”.
