The conference will present the recent publication, by the People’s Publishing House, of “The History on the Tombstones”, an important academic essay on the inscriptions on the tombstones of the Chala Cemetery. The book, written by Chen Xinyu, researcher at the Beijing Administrative Institute, is an opportunity to systematically explore over 400 years history of the development of the Chala cemetery, through the comparison of existing inscriptions, the art of the cemetery, etc. Thus, highlighting the importance of the Chala cemetery in the history of Sino-Western cultural exchange from the historical positioning of the cemetery, cultural exchange between East to West, weigh balance between political and religious, diversified development of the cemetery, and characteristics of the times.
Dr. Chen Xinyu published the works Chunqiu Shiming—Research on the History and Inscriptions of Chala Cemetery (now called The Cemetery of Matteo Ricci and other foreign missionaries) in 2020. This book begins with an overview of the formation of the Chala cemetery, the historical events , and the current situation. As for the study of the inscriptions on the tombstones, presents the words on the inscription (Chinese, Latin and Manchu), and compare their similarities and differences, so as to truly reproduce the content of the inscriptions. This provides important historical support for understanding the missionary’s experience in China and the role of Western learning in the East. Besides, the discussion of the art characteristics of Chala cemetery and the analysis of the relationship between Lu Zhengxiang’s family tomb and Chala cemetery have further enriched the research on Chala cemetery, and thus have a better historical positioning, cultural influence and era characteristics of Chala cemetery.
