CINEMA: THE ITALIAN GENIUS OF MORRICONE AND
ROSSINI celebrates the profound connection between two iconic figures of Italian music — Ennio Morricone and Gioachino Rossini. Both composers, though separated by centuries, created music that was inseparable from the images it accompanied: Rossini’s compositions brought operatic drama to life on stage, while Morricone’s scores became the heartbeat of some of the greatest films in cinematic history.
This unique program highlights their genius, showcasing how music has the power to tell stories, evoke emotions, and bring images—on the stage or screen—to vivid life.
The concert opens with Ennio Morricone’s Sergio Leone Suite, a collection of unforgettable themes from some of his most iconic collaborations with the legendary filmmaker. Featuring music from A Fistful of Dollars, Once Upon a Time in America, Giù la Testa, Once Upon a Time in t he West, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, this suite captures the grandeur, intensity, and emotional depth that defined Morricone’s work.
From the silver screen, we step into the world of Italian opera with Niccolò Paganini’s Variazioni di Bravura on “Mosè Themes” by Rossini. Paganini transforms Rossini’s dramatic operatic themes from Mosè in Egitto into a virtuosic tour de force, showcasing the dramatic and emotional power of Italian opera through instrumental brilliance.
We then return to Morricone with the Muse Suite, a collection of themes dedicated to significant female characters in film. Pieces such as Chi Mai (from Maddalena), La Donna Romantica, The Lady Caliph (from La Califfa), and Malena highlight Morricone’s extraordinary ability to portray the beauty, complexity, and emotional depth of these iconico women through his music.
Gioachino Rossini’s Une Larme follows, a touching and introspective work that reveals his ability to evoke profound emotion with simplicity and grace, providing a beautiful contrast to the dramatic intensity of his operatic compositions.
The program continues with Morricone’s Love Suite, a collection of some of his most heartfelt and timeless melodies. Themes such as Deborah’s Theme (from Once Upon a Time in America), Playing Love (from The Legend of 1900) and Love Theme for Nata (from Cinema Paradiso) showcase
Morricone’s unparalleled gift for expressing the deepest of human emotions.
The concert concludes with a playful and virtuosic nod to Rossini through Figaro Variations by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, based on Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. This piece brilliantly captures the wit, charm, and sparkling energy of Rossini’s most beloved character, Figaro.
Through this program, we honor the artistic legacy of Morricone and Rossini— two masters who used their music to elevate storytelling, each defining their respective art forms. From the operatic stage to the silver screen, their work reminds us of the enduring power of music to connect us with stories, emotions, and the images that shape our imagination.
