Gianluca Cingolani is an artist who works on memory, both individual and collective, shared memory.

The exhibition Fragmenta at the Today Art Museum, in Beijing, with the video sequenceen titled FR 12.1 the artist captures a fragment that made the history of law in Europe, a couplet describing the working method of the Bolognese school that studied and reinterpreted Roman law to adapt it to the needs of the early modern age and by means of such study, founded the University of Bologna, the first University in the Western world.

Roman law is a great patrimony of Western culture.

The Romans were the first to read the world in a legal key, they created a world of categories that still underpin the framework of law. When, after the year one thousand, the historical process that led to the modern age began in Europe, there was a rediscovery of Roman law which is one of the elements tracing the path to modernity.

The work that carried out on Roman texts, as the couplet that Gianluca Cingolani reproduced in his work tells us, is a work of deconstruction of ancient Roman law, a work done to reconstruct, to build new categories of law that could sustain the then emerging new world.

This couplet marks a historical passage, it is a path of written memory, a memory preserved in a language that, like the law, is a grammar of the social world.
