Eva, a mysterious doctor, searches for an answer to her urgent dilemma as she unravels the manuscript of The Book of Vision by 18th century physician Johan Anmuth. The film was the Critics Week opener at the Venice Biennale.
Synopsis
Eva, a doctor and student of the history of medicine, discovers a manuscript of The Book of Vision by Johan Anmuth, an 18th century Prussian physician. In the book, Anmuth studies the feelings, fears and dreams of over 1,800 patients, whose spirits still wander through the pages. Immersing herself in these tales and visions, Eva calls into question the split between past, present and future, while confronting the challenges of modern medicine and its limitations with respect to her own body. Produced by Terrence Malick, the film has a narrative that shuttles between the present and the 18th century. It is documentary director Carlo Hintermann’s first feature and the Critics Week opener at the Venice Biennale.
