There are very few studies published concerning Chinese Modernist and Contemporary architecture. In most cases, they concern a repertoire of building cases with few critical notes. The intention of this conference is to contextualize the architecture in China in the last 120 years in the historical and cultural events in the complex scenario of the development of the 20th Century. The discussion is centred not only on the technical discussion on architecture, such as typology morphology and language, but mostly on the reasons which generate certain solution and decorative elements in key masterpieces in China.
What is more important in this analysis is to find the relationship between Chinese Modernist architecture under the influence of Western trends. This relationship can not simply be classified as “copy”. On the contrary, it is a complex relationship between Wester influence, Chinese identity and necessity, and even more the presence of Western Modernist architects in China beside Chinese architects who study in Europe and United States. Their talents, the quality of their work and even the geniality of certain solution testify a very complex debate, full of original idea and great professionalism which generate masterpieces in cities like Tianjin, Beijing, Qingdao, Guangzhou and so on. This debate is not limited on the Modernist architecture, but it is still vivid even today. The context of the Chinese architecture is particularly interesting because it expresses very precisely what Kenneth Frampton called “Critical Regionalism”, or the local interpretation of the international trendin architecture.
However, the conference will point out some fundamental concepts and examples in architecture from the Modernist age until the most recent cases in architecture built in China to illustrate some fundamental concepts in this difficult but fascinating fields.
