Concerto “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” di Giovanni Paisiello

We are delighted to announce that in the framework of our strengthened cooperation with the National Centre for the Performing Arts, the second recommended performance is the Opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia of Giovanni Paisiello in Concert, belonging to the series “Opera prima dell’Opera”.

In order to promote Sino-Italian cultural exchanges, the NCPA and Italian Embassy jointly hold a concert series Opera Before Opera
starting from 2019. In Western operas, the same story is often used by different composers in their creative works, so there are various operas of the same name. With this series of opera concerts we will introduce to music lovers the versions of famous operas from different composers, some of which never performed in China.

Giovanni Paisiello is an Italian composer. In 1782, he created the opera buffa Il Barbiere di Siviglia in two acts based on the same-name libretto by French writer Pierre Beaumarchais, making him the first composer who put the play on the opera stage. Paisiello’s version is more than 30 years ahead of Rossini’s. It is acknowledged for its witty plots, bright music and difficult arias. The great popularity and numerous fans once gained in Italy pushed his opera buffa creation to its peak. Due to its great influence of Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Rossini caused a big stir in Roman music circles when he had rewritten it in 1816.
This concert is the premiere of Giovanni Paisiello’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia in China, so it is also a great opportunity for Chinese audiences to know more about him and his Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Artists will send holiday wishes to the audience in a classical and elegant way on the occasion of the Spring Festival.

Synopsis

The story is set in Seville, Spain in the 17th century. Young Count Almaviva falls in love with Rosina, a rich and beautiful girl.
Nonetheless, the greedy Doctor Bartolo, Rosina’s guardian, intends to marry her himself. Knowing nothing about what to do next, Almaviva turns to Figaro, the barber in the city, for help, who loves meddling in another man’s business. Bartolo tries every means to stand in the way, together with  the music teacher Basilio’s assistance, but all in vain by Figaro’s variety of excellent schemes. The story culminates in themarriage of the Count Almaviva and Rosina after a series of funny farces.

He studied music at the Jesuit school at Tarento. His talent to write comedy opera was revealed at young age. From 1776 to 1784, on the invitation of the Empress Catherine, Paisiello worked as Chapelmaster to the court of St. Petersburg. Among a number of operas written there must be mentioned ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia‘, one of his best works, and to which a special interest attaches from its effect on the first representation of Rossini’s opera of the same name. After eight years in St. Petersburg, Paisiello returned to Italy, stopping at Vienna on his way back, where he wrote twelve ‘symphonies’ for Joseph II, and an opera ‘Il Re Teodoro‘, containing some of his best music. In 1784, he was named Chapelmaster to Ferdinand IV. of Naples, and during the next thirteen years produced several of the works by which he became most widely known, notably ‘I Zingari in Fiera’, ‘Nina, o la Pazza d’Amore’, and ‘La Molinara.’

In 1802, Paisiello went to Paris, where Buonaparte treated him with a magnificence rivalling that of Catherine of Russia. On Paisiello’s
return to Italy he was endowed with a considerable pension, was re-established in his old place at Naples, and was maintained in it by
Joseph Buonaparte, and after him by Murat. But the favour he enjoyed under Napoleonic dynasties inevitably brought him once more into trouble when the Bourbons returned. He then lost all the pensions settled on him by the various crowned heads he had served. In 1815 he died in poverty.

He composed about 80 operas, and at leastas many other works, of different kinds, such as “La serva padrona”(1769),“Don Chisciotte” (1769),”Achille in Sciro” (1778), “Il barbiere di Siviglia” (1782),“Il re Teodoro in Venezia” (1784),”La olinara” (1788),”Nina” (1789),“Didone abbandonata” (1794),”Proserpina”(1803). Expression, within certain restricted limits,
was Paisiello’s strong point. All his airs are remarkable for simplicity and grace, and some have considerable charm.

Accademia Musicale Chigiana

Founded in 1932 by Count Guido Chigi Saracini, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana is a world-renowned institution for advanced musical studies.
